In this informative and enlightening Subject Spotlight, Dr Matt Hardy presents ECGs: exploring the human heart - a look at the impact of ECGs on the advancement of heart monitoring. He begins by explaining what an ECG is, thinks about anatomy in terms of the structure of a human heart and cardiac cycles, and documents the electrical conduction of a cardiac cycle. In episode 2, Matt explains how ECGs work, what happens to the body and heart during an ECG, and then goes on to look at arrhythmia, mainly what they are and common arrhythmias that appear on ECGs. Dr Matt Hardy then addresses a well–known cardiac incident involving a footballer, and discusses the consequences and treatment after such an event, before discussing some of the different types and commonalities of inherited arrhythmia of the heart. The Spotlight is concluded by documenting 3rd degree AV block and how that appears on an ECG, before presenting an activity which encourages you to think like a clinician, and draw an ECG of a patient with a specific heart condition.

Dr Matt Hardy
Dr Matt Hardy is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Sciences at the University of Bradford. Dr Matt’s PhD research focused on the development of an assay to detect proarrhythmic potential in pharmaceutical test compounds. He continued his interests in cardiovascular (patho)physiology by undertaking research positions in the areas of cardiac dysfunction during sepsis, heterogeneity in the right failing ventricle, and mechanisms of cardiac anoxia tolerance. Dr Matt also has a strong interest in teaching biosciences, as well as in pedagogical research, with focuses in the areas of biology and academic skills development. He is also a representative for the Physiological Society as well as being on the editorial board for Physiology News.
