About this Subject Spotlight

Join Associate Professor at UCL, Jeff Bowersox, as he explores the German language with a keen focus on history and literature. Jeff will then consider the development of Germans across history, including an insight into their geography and culture, before taking a look into the foundations of German fairytales, and how the stories of The Brothers Grimm have shaped what we know as ‘Germany’. Jeff ends this Subject Spotlight with an exciting activity, which allows you to explore passages from Rapunzel and identify changes throughout the generations.

German at UCL

This four year BA (Hons) degree in German at the University College of London focuses heavily on the development of German language and culture throughout time. In your first, second, and fourth year you will be introduced to, and undertake modules studying the German language across disciplines such as film, literature, history, and linguistics. In your third year, you will undertake study abroad (where German is spoken) to put into practice the skills and linguistic tools you have developed so far. Over the duration of the course, you will study under academic staff who are prominent in their fields (such as German film, history, psychology, and even medieval comedy) and will deepen your knowledge of the German language, developing valuable skills in critical thinking and literacy.
