We’re diverse in our makeup but united in our ambition. This is our change.

About this Subject Spotlight

Join Dr Tess Osborne and Dr Matt Wilde as they explore the causes, consequences and potential solutions to climate change. In this Subject Spotlight we’ll be exploring the real-world impacts that climate change will have, and is already having, on human societies both across the globe and here in the UK. These include the impacts on the natural world caused by global warming and new social and political challenges around energy, food production, inequality and migration. Finally, you’ll finish the session by doing some of your own research into the geographies of our clothes.

BA/BSc Geography at the University of Leicester

Studying BA or BSc Geography at the University of Leicester, you will enter a dynamic discipline that seeks to better understand the natural world and how humans interact with it by pulling together the interconnections of a diverse range of perspectives from geoscience to sociology, to tackle issues from soil degradation to migration. Both the BA and BSc pathways are accredited by the Royal Geographical Society, and will allow you to experience the full breadth of Geography, while specialising in either the physical side or the human side.

Whether you are enrolled on the BA or BSc Geography course, you will share a common first year, providing a solid foundational knowledge in both physical and human geography. You will cover core topics such as digital geographies, the earth system, and people and place, as well as developing essential quantitative and qualitative data skills. If you find you prefer the topics from the opposite pathway to the one you’ve enrolled on, this common first year allows you to switch pathways before your second year. You will still be able to take some modules from the opposite pathway throughout your degree, meaning you can tailor your degree to become a generalist, or a specialist in your pathway, depending on your interests.

Years 2 and 3 on the BA pathway will open you up to many fascinating topics, including historical and philosophical geography, the geopolitics of urban space, climate change adaptation, and geographies of the marketplace. Years 2 and 3 for BSc geographers will explore the science of habitats, earth systems and environmental challenges, including: neotropical rainforests, drylands, the challenges of climate change, the biosphere and water quality. You will continue to share some common modules, and gain transferable skills in remote sensing, geographical information science and statistical and data presentation methods. For both pathways, a large part of your third year will be focussed on your dissertation.

Additionally, field work is integral to both physical and human Geography, and you will have opportunities to complete field work in places like the Amazon Rainforest and Death Valley in California throughout your degree.

There are further options to study geography at the University of Leicester. If you only want to study human geography, focussing solely on the social science of issues like migration, environmental governance and sustainability, then BA Human Geography is for you. To develop a robust understanding of the earth science underpinning key environmental and ecological challenges, from Geographical, Geoscientific and Biological perspectives, choose BSc Environmental Science. If you’re specifically interested in landscape processes, and how the rock and fossil record are interpreted to help us understand the patterns of life on Earth throughout time and space, apply for BSc Physical Geography & Geology.
