About this Subject Spotlight

In this Subject Spotlight, Dr Nicholas Ford introduces you to what entrepreneurship is and looks at why it plays an important role in a constantly developing World. Dr Nicholas then explores some of the skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur, including strategic agility. In episode 3, Dr Nicholas talks about a local business: The Tomato Stall. Dr Nicholas discusses how their adaptability in the face of increasing change has ensured their success. In the final episode, Dr Nicholas sets you an activity which encourages you to analyse the brand of a small business, discusses Oprah Winfrey’s success, and then finally offers you some career advice to think about after you graduate.

BA Entrepreneurship & Business at University of Portsmouth

In an ever-changing business landscape, the importance of entrepreneurs has never been greater. The University of Portsmouth’s BA (Hons) Entrepreneurship and Business degree course will develop the necessary skills to thrive in the business world, particularly if you already have an idea for a small business, or a keen interest in entrepreneurship. Through a variety of lectures, workshops, and real-life scenarios you will be introduced to entrepreneurship, identifying key skills in idea generation and creativity. You will also begin to learn how to manage small teams and understand the variety of structures in small businesses. You will also undertake an initial deep-dive into marketing principles and practice, as well as business accounting and finance. In your second year, you will build on the knowledge gained in your first year and begin to apply new skills such as self-motivation and entrepreneurial spirit. You will also experience real business problems and be able to critically respond to them in an efficient manner. You will also learn more about contemporary issues in entrepreneurship and then finally hone your skills of managing product portfolios. There are also a variety of optional modules which include employment law, modern foreign languages, and electronic and mobile commerce. Between your second and third years, there is the opportunity to undertake a placement in the professional working world, culminating in a certificate of professional practice - a fantastic opportunity for anyone who wishes to learn on the job. Finally, in your third year you will have the experience of working in a consultancy team on projects with local organisations and businesses, as well as finetune your skills as an entrepreneur and hone in on strategic management.
