Join Dr Amy Louise Morgan from the University of Surrey as she considers why stories still matter and how choosing to study an English degree is as relevant as ever. She takes an in-depth look at understanding the motives behind storytelling and how they impact us, both as people and within the societies we live in. English Literature with Creative Writing at the University of Surrey

If you’re an aspiring writer and a literature enthusiast, the English Literature, or English Literature with Creative Writing (BA Hons) at the University of Surrey might be the degree for you. Conducting engaging and intellectually challenging teaching in literature and creative writing, all of Surrey's academics are acclaimed writers and scholars as well as enthusiastic and experienced teachers who convey ideas and explain techniques and methodologies enthusiastically and accessibly.

On the English Literature or English Literature with Creative Writing course, you’ll study vital and influential works of literature, reading and discussing contemporary works as well as classics in a wide range of genres. You’ll also develop a wide range of creative writing skills and knowledge, looking at forms such as novels, short stories, poetry, plays, screenplays, gaming and graphic novels.

Alongside classic works like those of Chaucer, Shakespeare, and George Eliot, you’ll study contemporary works by writers including Kazuo Ishiguro and Jhumpa Lahiri amidst genres like travel writing, nineteenth-century theatre and Beat writing. The creative writing modules will develop your understanding of the techniques used and challenges faced by the writers you study on your English literature modules. They will also help you find inspiration and root your own creative work in the authors and literary traditions you’ll be studying.
