BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science at University of Bedfordshire

The Sport and Exercise Science BSc (Hons) course at the University of Bedfordshire is made for you if you’re fascinated by the science behind sport and exercise performance. It will allow you to work with high-spec equipment on real projects with leading researchers to get to the heart of what makes a great sports performer. The course is endorsed by the British Association of sport and exercise sciences (BASES) and ranks 3rd for graduate outcomes in the 2023 Complete University Guide.

Location and facilities

Located on the University of Bedfordshire’s Bedford campus, you will have access to the state of the art facilities in the School of Sport Science and Physical Activity. These include: six purpose-built BASES-accredited sport and exercise science laboratories (with equipment including online gas-analysis machines, an environmental chamber, 3D motion analysis and echocardiography); a nutrition research kitchen; and two molecular and cellular physiology labs.

What you learn

Throughout your degree you will develop a sound knowledge of the science of sport and exercise, including anatomy, biomechanics and physiology, as well as the fundamentals of sports performance, including nutrition and coaching. Through optional modules you can branch into specialisms in psychology, biomechanics or physiology, learning to apply your knowledge practically and in different contexts. You will also be equipped with essential academic writing and research skills, with plenty of time spent in laboratory facilities and working on real projects for elite sports teams, governing bodies and government initiatives.

Your graduate career

The course aims to boost your employability after graduation. Not only will you receive teaching dedicated to building your employability skills, you will also engage with current industry research throughout your studies, as well as having the opportunity to gain a recognised fitness qualification endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA). Additionally, you will have the option to undertake an industry placement year where you will gain practical experience with a relevant employer to sample your chosen profession, and also to make connections that may open doors to future employment.
