Founded in 1834 as a medical school only, Newcastle University now comprises of three faculties: medical sciences, science agriculture and engineering, and humanities and social sciences. The university has a rich and varied history - King's Hall being repurposed as a hospital during wartime and a statue of Martin Luthor Kind Jr in the courtyard of the same building commemmorating his honourary degree from the university, just two examples.
