Newcastle University is a member and representitive of the presitious Russell Group of universities showcasing the best of British education. Founded in 1834 as a medical school only, Newcastle University now comprises of three faculties: medical sciences, science agriculture and engineering, and humanities and social sciences. The university has a rich and varied history - King's Hall being repurposed as a hospital during wartime and a statue of Martin Luthor Kind Jr in the courtyard of the same building commemmorating his honourary degree from the university, just two examples.

It is perhaps one of the more accessible Russell Group universities - in 2017 it awarded offers to over 92% of applicants, the highest of all red brick universities that year. Newcastle is also one of the leading universities for sport in the UK. It supports over 50 sport clubs and takes part in the annual Northumbrian Water University Boat Race, competing against Durham University along the river Tyne (and occassionally on the River Wear).
